The Young Pitcher Books

Zane Grey wrote better westerns than he did sports stories. Of course when I read THE YOUNG PITCHER some seventy years ago I didn't know the difference, nor did I care. I liked sports better. So when I found this classic as a free offering on Kindle I snapped it up, eager to return to my youth. Today I think Grey's westerns were probably the better books, but they weren't written for young people. So the naïveté in language, the good manners, and the life lessons Grey inserted in these novels seems stodgy when contrasted with contemporary writing. One might doubt that the language and interactions in the dugout and on the campus existed as Grey portrayed them even in the early 1900s. But the rough and tough cowhands in Grey's books didn't cuss and fool around either, although the old bunkhouse, in reality, was anything but a lady's parlor. That wasn't this writer's style.

So that's probably part of the charm of re-reading these books today. No vile language, no profuse blood and guts, no gratuitous sex. Just a simple read with the additional understanding that one's imagination is as essential to a story as in-your-face grossness.

THE YOUNG PITCHER was a pleasant respite from some of the more challenging books that await me. Zane Grey should be read occasionally to purge the mind and refresh the soul.

The Young Pitcher Books Reviews

Perhaps not a great story even though by a great story writer to be. But, for sports history, it is a wonderful description of college baseball (and college sports since there far fewer then) around 1900. The game has not changed much but the life of a college athlete, coaching methods, sport psychology, and fan participation have changed immensely. For that, it is a very interesting read.
A good baseball story to read in a couple days.
Excellent book by Zane grey as usual. Good storyline and follow up throughout the book. I have never read a bad book by this author.
When we purchased a , my husband asked me to pick out a couple of free books for him to read. He travels a great deal and often has time in the evenings. He LOVED this story by Zane Grey - a real departure from Mr. Grey's westerns! This was about a young man playing college baseball. He enjoyed the story so much he had me find a copy of the hardcover book to give to a family of teenage baseball enthusiasts we know! A great story with some humor and a lot of good character lessons.
Great book. I did not know that Mr. Grey wrote anything but westerns. Very surprised that the game of baseball this has the exact play of hits runs, and pitching as we have today. Great story line and loved the characters. Great writing.
I love Zane Grey!!!! This one is different from the ones I read as a young girl, but it was still in the Zane Grey fashion of describing it to where you could almost feel that you are there as well. As a young girl I read his western novels. Loved them!!! So as I started going technical I started looking for my favorite author. Was so glad when I found I could get his stories again!!!!!!!
I enjoyed reading this book when I was a teenager in the late '40s and I enjoyed reading it again last week. Most folks think that Zane Grey only
wrote westerns. He also wrote about baseball and fishing as well as a frontier series (3) involving the Girty brothers, Lew Wetzel, and members
of the ZANE family.
